Awaken #napowrimo (day eighteen)

Creaking of oldness,
joints scream their age
Trumpeting of water,
finds its tepid rage
Singing of teens
carelessly prep for the day
Humming of electricity
primes the light display
Growling of espresso

Did you know: The Saguaro cactus only grows in the Southwest in the US? It can grow to be over 40 ft tall, weigh up to 4,000lbs when fully hydrated, has a wood skeleton and grows new spines from the top. It is known as a spire until roughly 75 years of age, or until it grows its first appendage. Saguaro can live well over 150 years and are protected by state laws. Imagine the sunsets these two have seen over the years. Imagine the development and progress they’ve witnessed, as well as the hardship they’ve endured. They are fruit providers, flowerers, seed spreaders, reproducers, home to many animals and a perch for the bravest of birds. Their uniqueness captivated me on our drive back from Sedona to Phoenix and they beckoned me to discover their mysteries. They know their place and they stand their ground with the best posture known to their kind. How can I not respect that? How can I NOT be in awe of a God that created such complex and radical life forms. It’s mind-boggling to think that these were around before us. Challenge yourself to see the things around you, be drawn into their design, think about how they were created, ponder what they could potentially mean and maybe even personify them for a brief moment. It changes everything! Life is worth celebrating. #shabbysunsetti

Clothing, shoes and urgent need toiletries aren’t included in this pic, but here is the rest of the dorm loot. Home practice is a hard thing to accomplish for me. It seems I do popcorn yoga rather than a slow simmering flow, but I will take what I can get—when I can get it. Lately, I’ve not been handstanding and this lack is not working my shoulders in the same way. So I’m back at it! How else can I “shoulder” the weight of regular life without this strengthening/stretching practice? We were called to keep our body a temple. I don’t know about you, but I want my temple to be healthy, strong and in line with my spirit, as well as HIS spirit. It was meant to be this way since God breathed life into Adam and told him to work (upkeep) the garden. How can things grow (physical, mental, spiritual and situational), or how can we progress, if we don’t tend them. #heaventoearthyoga #shabbyyogalegs *Also of note: yoga isn’t a handstand or difficult pose, as you might think, it’s the breath of life that flows into the spaces we are willing and eager to open; it’s the stretch, hold, push, pull, balance, rest and turn upside down pose. It is a little bit at a time, at your own pace + not competing with anyone, that makes the gains. Am I’m here to tell you that the gains are more mental and spiritual than they are physical. Try it.

When you’re up you’re up, and when you’re down you’re down, and when you’re only half way up, you’re neither up nor down. (Grand Old Duke of York) Half way up doesn’t exists in T1, since it’s always moving, but that old song sure does ring true in other ways. It’s like a carnival. Bella has some darts and she gets to take a chance at popping some of the balloons before she runs out of supply...and time. Sometimes she hits the mark, and sometimes she doesn’t. In this game, she doesn’t get to leave when she’s mad about her aim, she must keep trying. // Summer has a way—sleeping late, skipping meals, not being consistently active—of doing this to ALL of us. This is where grace comes in, right? The carnival worker is happy to take our money and give us a second, third and fiftieth try, thankfully. That big prize awaits: 6.5 A1C...one of these days. But for today, we have a small/medium prize for the amount of balloons popped. 8.0 A1C and a beautiful Bella to enjoy as she *slays* life, education, arts, friendship and yes, #t1d Her empathy and depth of wisdom exceed her tiny frame. I’m proud. And she keeps on showing me (daily) how to be strong. #t1dbella (and my 5,000th pic. Where’s the 🎉 confetti?)

When her dorm situation changed from a quad—with her own room and door—to a double which is a shared room, we had to ditch the idea that this tapestry would be her wall decor. Instead, we incorporated it into the home guest room as a way to remember the completion of one stage in life and the journey to another. That desk to the left was and is the first desk I purchased for my children: they each have one. From ikea, I’m surprised it held up. Some things cannot be parted with just yet. Time will make the transitions easier...I think. I fondly remember our new school room where they both embraced organizing their space and working hard at their own desk.
